The exploration of historical landscapes often presents challenges, particularly when attempting to reconcile old maps with contemporary geographic data. Changes in settlements, the emergence or disappearance of roads, and the overall evolution of the terrain can complicate the identification of specific locations, such as farms or significant buildings. Addressing these complexities, the Maps Explorer application has been developed to aid users in their navigational endeavors.

Maps Explorer enables users to overlay any historical map image onto a modern Google map. This innovative feature allows for the integration of multiple historical maps, effectively "stitching" together various fragments of geographic history. The application supports a diverse range of maps, including those from the Soviet era, German and Polish cartographies, as well as maps from notable figures such as Schubert and Mende. Once maps are aligned, users can adjust transparency and reposition fragments to enhance clarity. Additionally, the app facilitates quick transitions between different map fragments, enabling users to identify and analyze the changes across various historical periods.
